An osteopathic screening exam seeks to answer the question, "Is there a problem"? The screening exam seeks to determine if there is dysfunction within the major regions of the patient's body by implimenting a rapid, broad assessment of overall asymmetry, tissue texture changes, or motion abnormalities that may be present in the cervical, thoracic, rib cage, lumbar, sacropelvis, and extremities.

The scanning exam is a more focused evaluation that seeks to answer the question, "Where and what is the problem", by narrowing down the specific anatomical region or tissue layer exhibiting restriction or hypertonicity. Precise palpation of individual vertebral segments enables the physician to determine the exact 3D motion restriction (e.g., whether a segment is flexed, rotated, or sidebent).
