Treatment - Lumbar Paraspinal

This soft tissue technique is useful for reducing tension in the soft tissues of the lumbar spine that may result from increased sympathetic reflex activity from the lower thoracic chain ganglia

Protocol
  • The patient should be positioned supine on the table and the operator is positioned so that they are seated at the patient's side. If the patient has an increased lumbar lordosis it is appropriate for them to bend their knees and have them place their feet flat on the table.
  • The hand placement is such that, with the fingers flexed, the finger pads are positioned over the patient's upper lumbar and lower thoracic transverse processes.
  • Contact with soft tissue is made with an anterior and laterally traction, which will introduce a small amount of segmental extension and sidebending.
  • This position is held until the tissues relax, which may take anywhere from 15 seconds to a minute.
  • The fingers are then repositioned until the entire lumbar spine has been treated.
