Instructional Objectives -- Basic Concepts of Osteopathic Medicine<

After completing these materials you will:

• Be familiar with the diagnostic criteria that defines somatic dysfunction.
• Learn two conventions for naming somatic dysfunction.
• Understand the differance between a normal barrier to motion and a barrier that results from pathology.
• Review several types of pathology that may result in somatic dysfunction.
• Understand the differance between Type I (neutral), Type II (nonneutral), and Type III motion mechanics.
• Review important anterior and posterior landmarks that you will use during diagnosis and treatment.
• Be familiar with a conventional axis system used to describe motion in three-dimensional space.
• Briefly review the history and uniqueness of osteopathic medicine.
